They are found in the 100 slums that make up 5% of the area of the city and live without access to the basic facilities of water, roads and electricity. It is these poor people who bear the full brunt of the problems the city experiences. The 150,000 homeless children in the city of Nairobi originate from these slums. So are the 70 people who die from the killer disease of HIV/Aids everyday. The slums also house 250,000 people who have the disease. The poor of Nairobi have been denied opportunity because of the injustice that is perpetrated by the misallocation of resources through past rampant corruption. They have been denied the opportunity to become self-supporting so as to live their dreams to the full. The poor need to be facilitated to assume problem ownership and self determination. This is the most sustainable solution to tackle extreme poverty. MISSION STATEMENT Nairobi Community Foundation (NACOF) is an institution that works to strengthen grassroots development by unleashing creativity in community asset-building. MISSION EXPLANATION Assets are the talents, skills and potentials possessed by the people, which can be used to improve the community. Once a community has created structures to recognize and nurture these assets, the community is set on a sure path of growth and renewal. A community remains undeveloped to the extent it has ignored, neglected or let its assets go to waste. The role of NACOF will be to work as a community convener and facilitator in asset building.
